The Selection Has Been Made!
Theatertreffen from 7th to 24th May 2010The jury for the 2010 Theatertreffen has spent a whole year travelling across the landscape of German-speaking theatre. Almost 350 productions were seen in urban centres and in the provinces, there were prolonged and intense discussions and the theatre was tested for its contemporaneity and social relevance. Now the choice has been made and the selection of the ten most notable productions in the last season of German-speaking theatre has been completed.
Alongside familiar names and styles it is possible to see certain tendencies in theatrical development on the basis of the nominated productions. Repertoires are no longer dominated by the classics, contemporary drama, film and novel adaptations, projects which refer to lived experience and performative productions feature instead. International co-productions and directors whose work crosses national boundaries are an increasingly normal part of the German-speaking theatre. Indeed, it this increasingly being shaped by projects which are created in an international context, such as “Die Stunde da wir nichts voneinander wußten” [The Hour When We Knew Nothing of Each Other] at Schauspielhaus Graz adapted and directed by Viktor Bodó in collaboration with his Szputnyik Shipping Company from Budapest or at the Vienna Burgtheater “Life and Times – Episode 1” by Pavol Liska & Kelly Copper, the directors of New York’s Nature Theater of Oklahoma.
The prizewinning performance from the 2009 Impulse Festival, “Othello c’est qui”, which will be shown as a guest performance during the Theatertreffen also reflects this tendency. This thought-provoking production from the artistic duo Gintersdorfer/ Klaßen deals with cultural identity, typecasting and clichés.
Come and gain your own impressions of the range of contemporary theatre! We look forward to seeing you in May!
Yours
Iris Laufenberg
