History is volatile, and a history of dance faces the challenge of the double volatility of both dance and history. As a Berlin Premiere, Musée de la danse is developing the project “20 Dancers for the XX Century” for the Soviet memorial in Treptower Park, a public space where artists and dancers will create a parcours across 20th century dance history. The French dancer and choreographer Boris Charmatz invites his colleagues to recall, appropriate, perform solo works of the last century – some forgotten, some acclaimed. They will range from Meyerhold’s biomechanics, folk dance and Vogueing to contemporary dance. Monuments and memorials inform later generations about bygone eras and it is one of their central objectives to help prevent history from repeating itself. These stony forms of commemoration traditionally assume that time-based arts are not very well suited to pass down historical events. With this open performance installation, Musée de la danse will rebut this assumption and demonstrate the insisting aspect of memory in the volatility of dance.
