Notes on functions and receptions in the Martin-Gropius-Bau

Classified as a historical monument, the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin is a building in which international exhibitions are presented. Its generous dimensions and its central location opposite Berlin’s parliamentary building and near Potsdamer Platz make the Gropius-Bau an attractive venue for functions and receptions.

Functions lasting one or more days can be carried out in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. The amount of time needed for preparations varies greatly and depends on the size, set-up and number of participants. It is recommended to visit the premises in order to make preparations.

The rent is subject to negotiation between the participating parties. The exact costs cannot be calculated without knowledge of the event. Expenses can include surveillance, technical personnel, costs for utilities, cleaning, insurance, etc.

North entrance / Main entrance

The Martin-Gropius-Bau is an international exhibition hall which attracts more than 500,000 visitors a year. With its temporary exhibitions, its central location and its palazzo-like ambiance it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin. Besides exhibitions the house offers rooms to be rented for exclusive functions, including events, gala dinners, stand-up receptions, meetings, conferences, lecture series, movie screenings, readings and discussions.

North vestibule

The north vestibule (130m²) is located near the entrance area of the Martin-Gropius-Bau and can be rented for standing receptions for up to 100 people. With its glass dome, top lighting and round bay between the main floors it can be used for stand-up receptions on the ground floor as well as the first floor.

Atrium

The atrium on the ground floor with its glass ceiling is the central space of the Martin-Gropius-Bau. With a surface area of 600 m² in the inner area and 540 m² in the surrounding gallery it is the largest space available for outside receptions and functions. The atrium can hold standing receptions for up to 700 people as well as seated meals for up to 450 persons.

Atrium – gallery of the in the upper floor

The gallery (540 m²) can be used for mid-sized functions of ca. 200 people (seated meal) and 350 people (standing reception). The gallery on the upper floor provides an impressive view of the atrium.

Rotunda

The Rotunda (200 m²) on the second floor can be used for smaller receptions. The room provides space for up to 100 people at stand-up receptions. The glass dome provides a special ambience.

Cinema hall

The 200-seat cinema hall is located in the basement of the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Various forms of projection make the cinema hall an attractive venue for screenings.

Equipment

  • Two 35mm film projectors with mechanically coupled film feed for the formats 1:1.37, 1:1.66, and 1:2.35 / Cinemascope as well as lenses and masks are available. The standards for the playback of formats according to the norms of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) are guaranteed.
  • In addition, a digital cinema projector DP2K-10S Barco for digital film playback is available. The projector with an integrated media player is DCI compliant.
  • Internet connection via glass fibre network and MAN is available. A sound system with 8 conference microphone stations, 6 hand microphones and 1 speaker microphone can be provided.

Conference room

The conference room is located on the second floor and provides space for 40 people. Variable tables allow large conferences for max. 40 people and also smaller working groups. A table microphone system with 19 audio stations, a beamer and a flipchart are available.

“Gropius” restaurant

The “Gropius” restaurant, seating 120, is located in the foyer of the ground floor and includes a summer terrace. The leaseholder of the restaurant has the exclusive title to provide food and service in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Food can also be provided outside the restaurant. The “Gropius” restaurant offers catering for functions. Its opening hours are identical with those of the exhibitions.
