Two artistic levels are coupled in the “Rosenkranz-Sonaten” (Mystery Sonatas) by Bohemian violinist and composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644–1704): the pious “glorification of the 15 mysteries of the life of Mary” on the one hand, and pure, abstract music, encompassing a whole range of innovative compositional techniques on the other. It is a piece that set new standards in the fields of composition and playing techniques alike.
Our programme will contrast a selection of the violin sonatas with contemporary masterpieces. At the heart of the evening’s concert will be a first performance of a new work by György Kurtág. All pieces will be presented by outstanding soloists – among them violinists Hiromi Kikuchi and Caronlin Widman – grouped around leading expert on baroque music Andrew Manze.
