“Šárka”, Janácek’s first opera, has only in recent years returned to stages and concert platforms. Extra-musical circumstances prevented the reaping of a well-deserved success back in the period of its origin: the then very young Janácek had misjudged the legal issues involved in a libretto; as a consequence, the opera could only be performed a very limited number of times. Moreover, this early piece soon became eclipsed by the great success of the composer’s subsequent works.

Instead of into the psychological depths that give the composer’s most well-known works relevance and topicality even in our days, “Šárka” leads us back into early Czech history. The mythical tale of a warrioress who falls in love with her enemy may belong to a time long gone – the alluring qualities of the sensuous music of this early masterpiece stand all the more undiminished.
