Rhythm has emerged as a transversal concept for the expression of time in a few manifest historical moments (1750, 1880-1920, 1970, and now) across the arts, poetics, philosophy, and social science. When rhythm is wrested from the established notion of measure in music, a perplexing diversity of terms, instruments and practices unfolds, situating it between a manner of flowing (ruthmos) and an order of movement, proportioned figure (metron), in “the gray gap between black beats” (Nabokov). Idiorhythmy, vibration, refrain, duration and slowness, disjunctive metronome, synchonization and rhythmic semantics, are some modes of rhythm’s expression that a group of choreographers and performance artists are investigating at P.A.R.T.S. Research Studios in dance and music workshops and theory seminars. During MaerzMusik, they will continue their inquiry into the following questions: Why, and in which conceptions and practices of rhythm, do we isolate rhythm as a parameter, and when and how must we account conversely for its transversal and intermediate status? Beyond a phantasmatic object for “a phenomenology from your window” (Lefebvre), how can rhythm proffer an analytical instrument? If acceleration and ex-temporization characterize the current rhythms of freelance work, are there other rhythms we ought to produce and embody if we are to act upon our collective individuation?
In their first session of „Rhythm-Expression“, the P.A.R.T.S. group will host composer Bernhard Lang to discuss his work, focusing also on the questions of rhythm.
The P.A.R.T.S. group consists of Vicente Colomar, Talia De Vries, Klaas Freek Devos, Bryana Fritz, Susanna Hood, Patrik Kelemen, Naïma Mazic, William Ruiz Morales and Azahara Ubera Biedma.

Das Diskurs-Format „Thinking Together“ widmet sich dem Phänomen Zeit in seinen gesellschaftlich-politischen, philosophischen und künstlerischen Dimensionen. Frei zugänglich, stellt das Projekt Zeit und Raum zur Verfügung, gemeinsam mit internationalen Gästen aus den Bereichen Philosophie, Politische Theorie, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, Computer- und Neurowissenschaften, sowie Musik, Tanz, Performance und Bildender Kunst über aktuelle Zeitfragen nachzudenken.
Unter dem Titel „Time and the Digital Universe“ spürt die zweitägige Eröffnungskonferenz neuen digitalen Zeitformen, ihren Eigenschaften und Auswirkungen nach. Zwischen dem 14. und 18. März beschäftigen sich Vorträge, Workshops, Seminare und experimentelle Formate u. a. mit aktuellen politisch-philosophischen Imaginationen der Zeitlichkeit, mit nicht-linearen Zeitkonzepten, mit dem Begriff Rhythmus, sowie mit unterschiedlichen Zeitpraktiken in den Künsten, in Philosophie und Wissenschaft.
