Naoyuki Manabe

Born in 1971 in Yokohama, Naoyuki Manabe studied composition and gagaku in Tokio. Gagaku is the traditional ceremonial music of the Japanese imperial court and includes the shō, a large wind instrument. In recent years, a series of contemporary musicians, among them Chaya Czernowin, Unsuk Chin and Helmut Lachenmann, have composed music for the shō. Naoyuki Manabe has received awards as a player and composer of traditional Japanese instruments.
