National Contests

Treffen junger Autoren 2012

The Zeit supplement for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2012 was entitled: “Da wächst was nach” (Something is budding). Eight young authors were featured in the supplement, all of them around 30 years old. Three of them had attended the Treffen junger Autoren (Meeting of Young Authors) when they first started writing. The Berliner Festspiele organised this meeting for the 27th time from 22-26 November 2012. And something was budding again, because 736 writers submitted a total of 1,820 texts for the national competition.

The nine-person jury of authors and journalists selected 20 young prize-winners, who read excerpts from their submitted work at the reading at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele on 25 November 2012. These and other texts selected by the jury are now available to read in an anthology.

An invitation to the Treffen junger Autoren does not just involve the public reading and the anthology. The actual meeting takes place behind closed doors at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The house is an ideal venue for the event, offering lots of space and freedom to concentrate for a few days on writing, reading, listening and discussing texts in a campus-like atmosphere. Every year, this creative atmosphere also lures back many former participants to the Treffen junger Autoren. They come to network, discuss ideas, plan projects and make friends; and the younger authors benefit from the experiences of the older ones. For the last two years the Treffen junger Autoren has also been directed at teachers, because it is they who often discover and foster a talent in one of their students. To support them in this important role is the aim of our forum – a training programme.
