“The Circle”

Workshop description
We will meet and action-meditate together on the subject of “The Circle”, hoping an idea will manifest itself and guide us. If it does not, we will then just do stuff and try to learn and discover more about this subject. We can take existing, pre-rehearsed movement sequences and start carving out different cores, looking for points where new thoughts, ideas and combinations can enter and take their place.

Maksim Komaro

“I started my circus life as a small child with magic and juggling, and eventually shifted over to directing and producing. I have done a variety of performances, some more carefully with a smaller brush, some splashed out with a bucket of paint. My works have made me proud and ashamed, happy and depressed. I have been too impatient to ever build one like my gravestone – it feels safer to stay in movement.”

Further information about the workshop

I have no method as such, but some recurring key elements in my practice are:

  • Avoid formal improvisations
  • Try to approach the core of things
  • Don’t rationalise
  • Don’t textualise
  • Try to trust the specific and the power of circus over thinking

I like to watch sequences over and over again, trying to find a point of entry for something new.

A rhetorical question for circus people:
If circus is the thing that got you moving for years and years, why is it that you keep falling prey to doubts about its power, and how could you once again bring all the cells in your body to the boil, getting you to shake, spin, jump and swing?

Information about the application

Required applicants
Number of people: 3-5

  • I would like to work with 3-5 artists working in disciplines like juggling, floor acro, contorsion, work with objects and aerial work. I would prefer disciplines that don’t require complex rigging or constructions. Musicians and cartoonists are welcome as well.

Questions for the applicants

  • A rhetorical question for circus people: If circus is the thing that got you moving for years and years, why is it that you keep falling prey to doubts about its power, and how could you once again bring all the cells in your body to the boil, getting you to shake, spin, jump and swing?

Please attach the following to your application

  • I would like to see two different videos from each applicant.
  • One presenting some work they have done in the past, and another communicating what they would be interested in or dream of realising if they had the possibility. This second video could simply be them speaking to the camera or anything else as well.
