MGB Welcome²

An intensive programme for welcome classes from primary, secondary and vocational schools

MGB Welcome² combines visual art and looking at works of art from different cultural areas with the promotion of language skills and artistic-practical work. Starting points are the exhibitions shown at the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Their topics, ranging from cultural-historical to contemporary, serve as links to establish a dialogue, to impart cultural values, to express oneself in an artistic way and to learn German.

The results from the workshops together with detailed schedules so that they can serve as models are available for download here, in order to provide ideas and recommendations for activities for other cultural institutions and schools. Schools wishing to participate find more information here.

The classes of young refugees and migrants participate in three-hour workshops each or every second week. The outcome of every workshop is an artistic-practical piece of work such as memory cards, diaries, portfolios which help the young people to memorize experiences made in the museum and which the classes can later use outside the Martin-Gropius-Bau to improve their German. In the context of MGB Welcome² the pupils of welcome classes can also get in touch with pupils from so called “regular classes” and every now and then their parents, siblings and friends are invited to the Martin-Gropius-Bau.

This culture and education project aims at sustainability and is therefore scheduled for at least one year. MGB Welcome² acts as a model and undergoes regular evaluation.
