Theatertreffen

Focus Fassbinder 2015

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s work is currently more present on German stages than ever. His method of reflecting history in stories seems to be as topical as a recurring political theme of his work: the pervasion of private lives by the fascist mindsets from the national socialist era.

The Theatertreffen continues the focus series that began with Dimiter Gotscheff in 2014. In 2015, the director, theatre maker and author will be the artist in the focus of attention. In parallel with the exhibition “Fassbinder – NOW” at the Martin-Gropius-Bau, the festival will highlight this enfant terrible of the West German film and theatre scene.

The Theatertreffen will endeavour to remind us of Fassbinder’s enormous influence on artists to the present day by hosting an artistic-discursive programme. Apart from including four current Fassbinder productions at Berlin theatres, the festival will organize a symposium on Fassbinder which will investigate the continuing impact of his political and aesthetic position and will lead up to a musical homage by Hanna Schygulla and a theatrical performance by Patrick Wengenroth. Further, the Theatertreffen will screen Volker Schlöndorff’s film adaptation of “Baal” (featuring Rainer Werner Fassbinder in the leading role),host a “Fassbinder Film Night” at Delphi Filmpalast and present a number of TV adaptations of his stage plays in a “Fassbinder TV-Room”.
