Lumen Drones is a Norwegian trio teaming the violin virtuoso Nils Økland with two members of the post-rock band The Low Frequency in Stereo: the guitarist Per Steinar Lie and the drummer Ørjan Haaland. Økland is a specialist on the Hardanger fiddle, a traditional Norwegian instrument in which four sympathetic strings resonate with the four – or sometimes five – “normal” strings. He is known to jazz listeners for his solo albums on the Rune Grammofon and ECM labels, and for his collaborations with the composer Christian Wallumrød and the harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland. The Hardanger fiddle may date back to the 17th century, but the music of Lumen Drones could hardly be more contemporary. Rock-derived riffs are decorated with electronic textures ranging from the delicate to the brutal, creating soundscapes that offer new avenues for improvisation.
