“Arrows Into Infinity” traces the fascinating path of Charles Lloyd’s long and illustrious career, from his childhood in Memphis and apprenticeship with Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King and other blues musicians in the 1950s through the worldwide success of his celebrated quartet (with Keith Jarrett) in the psychedelic ’60s to his decision to end a lengthy silence and return to performing in 1980, encouraged by his friend Michel Petrucciani. Lloyd’s deep spirituality is fully explored, and there are also opportunities to see him playing with the pianist Jason Moran, in a duo with the drummer Billy Higgins, and – not on a stage but at the pool table – with Ornette Coleman. Including interviews with Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, Robbie Robertson and many others, this is a candid and beautifully made portrait of one of today’s most distinguished jazz musicians, whose arc of creativity is reaching a new peak in his eighth decade.
