In the manner of Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and with strong choreographic images, Bara Kolenc, Atej Tutta and their performers examine the use and misuse of rhetoric in politics, markets and the media. RETORIKA is the third instalment of the long-term project “Metamorphoses 1° - 5°”, which consists of performances, installations, video-art productions and theoretical formats.
The theatre is a purely practical art. The challenge lies in wrapping it up in a theoretical form, translating it and making it digestible. The theatre deals with the “now”; it’s all about one moment in the present: Either it works or it doesn’t. Explanations after the fact are useless, because after the performance, the theatre is dead. The authors of “Metamorphoses 3° : RETORIKA” approach the theatre from the perspective of philosophy and in consequence find a sufficiently enigmatic form: the passage between traditional representation in the theatre and a performative trend in visual arts. The visual and acoustic elements they create render their content palpable; they translate it for us, as it were – entirely without didactics, but in a both highly poetical and practical manner. The dead silence, the noises that mask meaning, the barely visible bodies, all belong to a coherent, closed concept and point in the same direction: towards the traces of lost communication. They try to lend meaning to human language, but language is apparently incapable of anything. How can we believe a political speech when we have been tricked so many times? How can I believe my lover when loving words have lied so many times? Solitary figures wander around an unrecognisable space, which is dissected, at times by sounds, at others by lights. There are no points of support and the mattresses lying around serve no purpose. Instead of evoking cosiness, home and peace, it feels like a clearing-out: It’s as if our culture had dropped away from our bodies and we were suddenly rendered culture-less. Everything is exhausted, dusty, foggy. Words no longer fulfil their purpose, as if robots were wandering the earth. Billions of artificial humans with no awareness, no purpose, no goal. I support this project because I believe in the consistency with which text, space, sound and characters are juxtaposed. I appreciate the self-limiting humility with which the artists managed to sparingly compress various layers, just like the mattresses in that unforgettable image.
