Lauf und bring uns dein nacktes Leben

Sierra Leone, a country ravaged by years of civil war, is the location of Rainer Merkel’s first play. His European perspective does not grant us a voyeuristic peek at the “naked, hard realities” of this country. Instead, we look back at Europe, as the text sketches an impressively precise portrait of the microcosm of NGOs in the field and coolly outlines the relationship between Europe and Africa. At times, the character risk their lives, losing themselves in “the other”, at others, they become entrenched in their own cynicism. Merkel’s play confronts us with the question of whether Europeans might not simply have been promoting ideology, selfishness and masochism for centuries, as colonialists or as post-colonialists.
