»It is very, very easy not to be offended by a book. You just have to shut it.«
Salman Rushdie

A new production by DV8 Physical Theatre about freedom of speech, censorship and offence: From the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses, to the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and the controversy of the »Muhammad cartoons« in 2005, DV8’s production will examine how these events have reflected and influenced multicultural policies, press freedom and artistic censorship. In the follow up to the critically acclaimed To Be Straight With You, this documentary-style dance-theatre production will use real-life interviews and archive footage. Contributors include a number of high profile writers, campaigners and politicians.

»Can We Talk About This? is not full of solutions but full of questions, decidedly empathetic to the gaping chasm that currently exists in discussion. It is an invitation to discussion and a firm reminder of its necessity. Without a doubt, it is one of the most important works of our age. Go.«
Time Out Australia *****

»Can We Talk About This? packs a huge punch in a highly disciplined 80 minutes or so. There's not a wasted moment nor an indulgent one. It’s one of those rare shows that demands and gets complete attention and absorption from its audience.«
The Australian

»Can We Talk About This? is a brilliant piece of theatre. In tackling the subject of multiculturalism, it crosses the boundaries of dance, documentary drama and sound. It sits somewhere in its own space, projecting a stream of shattering messages calmly and clearly in a way that is unexpectedly poetic and close to operatic … without the singing.«
Sydney Morning Herald *****

»After the short Sydney season Can We Talk About This? goes to Hong Kong and then to Europe. It opens in Berlin in late October, just a year after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said multiculturalism in her country had ›failed totally‹. Shortly after she backtracked, saying diversity had made Germany stronger but immigrants had to be better integrated. Now that will be an interesting night.«
