Ghosts are intermediate beings, at once present and absent, existing between the present and a past where they cannot come to rest. In Philippe Parreno’s work, they show up in all those places where his art leaves blank spaces. What do they stand for and are they even actually there? Or do we evoke them ourselves, with our perception, our thoughts and our notions?
Art historian Dr Jörn Schafaff researches, writes and teaches on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. His monography on Philippe Parreno was published by Walther König in 2010.
