With the exhibition “Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions”, the Julia Stoschek Collection brings work of the US-American film maker, cinematographer and artist to Germany for the first time. Over the past three decades, Arthur Jafa has developed a dynamic, multi-disciplinary artistic practise that includes films and installations as well as lectures, performances and happenings. His works address and question established cultural statements on identity and ethnicity. Jafa’s work is guided by the recurring question of: How can we develop a visual aesthetics that corresponds to the power, beauty and disassociation of African-American music in US-American culture? This exhibition was conceived in association with Serpentine Galleries, London, and curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Amira Gad. It is open to visitors of Jazzfest Berlin in four special guided tours.
