Wu Tsang

There is no nonviolent way to look at somebody

4 September 2019 to 12 January 2020

Following her year as part of the Gropius Bau’s In House: Artist in Residence programme, Wu Tsang’s solo exhibition opens in September.

The exhibition presents a selection of existing moving-image works alongside a new film. In her films, Wu Tsang questions how bodies that are seen as posing a threat to normative social structures move within the violence of everyday environments so as to ensure their survival. Using her hybrid cinematic language that fuses the registers of fiction and documentary, Wu Tsang creates a form of choreography, which explores both the movement of the performers and the camera. A series of stained glass works, conceived for the Gropius Bau's light-flooded rooms offer poetic reflection upon the tensions between transparency and opacity.
