Which Political Strategies Does the Theatre Need?

Following the unfortunate attempt to appoint a new artistic director for Schauspiel Köln, there was no dearth of criticism. In the newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, writer Navid Kermani described the finding process as a “humiliation for the city” and accused the political decision makers of irresponsible behaviour. An open letter demanded that those in charge pay more attention to greater transparency, artistic quality and a contemporary discourse. What are the political motives behind the decisions?
