At the Gropius Bau The Black Image Corporation. Theaster Gates shows ten large-format prints of the photographers Moneta Sleet Jr. and Isaac Sutton as well as over a hundred photographs in four specially made cabinets. Many pictures show black women, actresses and models; others show the back of photographs with information about the location, date and photographer.
Based on Theaster Gates' selection of images from the archive of the Johnson Publishing Company, the participants will explore the impact, distribution and production of photographic images. Central questions of staging and self-staging, of self-empowerment through the production and publication of images will be discussed together. After visiting the exhibition, the participants themselves will become image producers and work on their own portraits with a Polaroid camera, which will be provided with the corresponding image information in a final presentation.
