Chicago multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer Angel Bat Dawid may be a late bloomer, arriving on the scene in her early 30s, but in the last few years she has made it clear that she is a force to be reckoned with. She discovered the city’s free music scene in workshops led by the fiercely independent reedist and community figure David Boykin, and the experience liberated her from jazz convention. She has made a huge impact in the wake of her self-made debut “The Oracle” – which she recorded on a cell phone, playing nearly everything herself. Her music is inspired by the self-determinacy of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the spiritual yearning in the music of figures like Yusef Lateef and Alice Coltrane. Since cutting the album, she has developed a close-knit band she calls The Brothahood, building on the collective aesthetic of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sun Ra Arkestra. Dawid is a seriously charismatic figure whose joy and enthusiasm is undeniably infectious.
