James Brandon Lewis UnRuly Quintet

German premiere

In an era of specialists New York saxophonist James Brandon Lewis feverishly maintains a wide-angle embrace of jazz, allowing only his sense of righteous conviction and soul seeking to determine his artistic choices. He’s a passionate improviser, but he honours forebears like Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden (with whom he studied), and James “Blood” Ulmer while embracing the rhythmic prerogatives of hip-hop in his music. Earlier this year he released his strongest recording “An UnRuly Manifesto”, a quintet effort bristling with defiance and beauty that pivots between avant-funk, free jazz, and hyper-melodic post-bop, with indelible themes launching masterfully modulated improvisation. Driven by the high-octane rhythm section of bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Warren Trae Crudup III, Lewis and frontline partner and trumpeter Jaimie Branch toggle effortlessly between elegiac unison lines steeped in bittersweet lyricism and spry bob-and-weave interplay and scorching, extended solos. In the group’s Jazzfest Berlin debut the exciting guitarist Ava Mendoza rounds out the line-up.
