Six different life stories illustrate various aspects of migration, merging with images of Hong Kong to create a multi-faceted city portrait: taking viewers into the labyrinthine corridors of Chungking Mansions in its poetic passages, capturing the city’s street scenes and giving an impression of its inhabitants’ everyday lives. There is an increasing premonition of the huge problems that Hong Kong will be facing in coming years: geographic limitations, a lack of architectural concepts, an exploding economy, migration into Hong Kong and, of course, the political and social uncertainties regarding the time after 1997.
