Five brilliantly crafted segments, each by a different director, make up this dark and brilliant political satire. The bleak scenes in the film include taxi drivers being forced to pass a Mandarin-proficiency test, an activist setting herself alight in front of the British Consulate, and Hong Kong children dressed in military uniforms and policing adults like the “Red Guards” from China’s Cultural Revolution.
This project is a reminder of the power of independent, intelligent film-making as a vehicle for social and political critique. Censored in China, this movie turned out to be a surprise hit in Hong Kong despite a modest budget and limited screening.
