Visiting : Luzern / Academy Concert I
Orchester der Lucerne Festival Alumni 2020
Ilan Volkov, conductor
Following the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2018, the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Alumni will be making their Musikfest Berlin-debut this year with the Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov. Their programme is entirely dedicated to composer Rebecca Saunders, who will be Composer in Residence at the 2020 Lucerne Festival and whose music is a focal point of the 2020 Musikfest Berlin.
Rebecca Saunders is this summer’s Composer in Residence Lucerne Festival. An exemplary cross-section of her compositions will constitute the festival’s focus on New Music. With the support of Roche, she has composed a new work to be premiered in Lucerne. She will not only be present in concerts but also in seminars for young composers, which will lead to a close, focused collaboration with the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy Alumni. This international network is a chance for musicians who attended the Lucerne Festival Academy to stay in touch and to benefit from opportunities to play concerts together. They know each other well and contribute a wide range of diverse experience. Pierre Boulez and Michael Haeflinger founded the Academy in 2004 with the aim of working on scores by contemporary composers and works from classic modernism with young musicians and composers. The artistic director of the Academy since 2016 is the composer Wolfgang Rihm. 1200 alumni are connected in this network today. This year, they will devote themselves to compositions by Rebecca Saunders. Conducted by Ilan Volkov, they will perform them at Musikfest Berlin – including the new work, which analyses the genre of the solo concert from the perspective of the sound researcher, and two works in which progress and sound are set by percussion.
