Movie Screening and Discussion

AB HEUTE – Der lange Weg zum eigenen Namen

At this event, we will show and discuss the recently released documentary AB HEUTE – Der lange Weg zum eigenen Namen in attendance of the filmmakers Sam Arndt and Sophia Emmerich and interview partners Nora Eckert, Henri Maximilian Jakobs and Tiyana. AB HEUTE is an authentic, intimate documentary giving voice to the discriminatory legal process of official name change experienced by transgender people in Germany. By sharing such a moving compilation of stories from the transgender community, the film lays bare the honest and varied experiences of navigating a legal system that seeks to invalidate transgender lives. The documentary is in German with English subtitles, the subsequent conversation is also in German.

Sophia Emmerich (she/her) is a photographer based in Berlin and works to increase the visibility and authentic representation of the queer community. As part of this, she has already worked with renowned brands such as Adobe, Skillshare and Fabletics and her images have been published several times in international magazines. Her law degree gives her a clear and informed view of complex issues, ultimately uniting social change and art.
