Revolverkino at the Gropius Bau

Silberblick

With “Coming Home” by Hal Ashby

Inspired by the exhibition The Cool and the Cold, where mirror reflections and parallels in the fine art of the USA and USSR play such an important part, Revolverkino at Gropius Bau adds complementarity and complexity to the big picture with three surprising pairs of films.

Coming Home (Hal Ashby, USA 1978), original version, 19:00

Her husband is fighting in Vietnam, so Sally (Jane Fonda) volunteers at the hospital to help veterans. There she meets her former high-school sweetheart, now bound to a wheelchair by his war wounds. Old feelings are rekindled – but what happens when her husband comes home? Tolstoy said there were two kinds of story: one about leaving home and the other about returning. Coming home is one of those rare war films that centre on the return. This was the first time that US cinema turned its spotlight on the Vietnam War.
