The Invention of a Woman
Deborah Feldman was rather late to discover the isms that are now familiar to so many of us. However, she found sociological terms useful tools in dissecting the ideological structures of her own inner world and reassembling them in new forms. Fifteen years after her first, cautious steps away from her religious community, she observes how the awkward lessons she learned then appear to have been entirely overtaken by new ways of looking at the world. Now she attempts that mental leap again: What would happen if she left the community under the present conditions? And: Is it still possible to create space through progressive thinking for all those who come from regressive circumstances?
