Matthias Pintscher wrote his flute concerto for Emmanuel Pahud, principal flute of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The piece represents a modern approach to a historical genre. Anton Webern’s arrangement of Bach, an interpretation of a canonical musical score from a modern compositional viewpoint, provides an ideal lead-in to Pintscher’s concerto.
