Here, the composers’ works are crystallised around the ideas of their musical predecessors. In the case of György Kurtág’s “Officium breve”, those composers are Webern, Bartók and Endre Szervánszky, the musician to whom the work is dedicated. Beethoven played this role for Brahms, who cites his music and uses it as a foil for his ideas. In Mozart’s quartet, however, there are the first signs of a principle that Kurtág heightens radically: the concentration of musical phrasing.
