Presentation · Barbara Wahlster
Speaker · Burghart Klaußner
Themes such as the partition of the Indian homeland, the magic of Karachi, the sensuality of the East and exile in a troubled new homeland are reminiscent of Hussein’s short stories. The author narrates complexly structured stories, interspersed with dreams, myths, flashbacks, and surprising twists in a crystalline and unpretentious prose. Hussein reads the title story from his collection “Turquoise”.
Aamer Hussein, born in Karachi in 1955, has published three volumes of short stories which are both magical and melancholic. The translator has discovered Urdu classics and female writers of his homeland.
