In “The Death of Vishnu”, the soul of a dead man, who spent his life as the handyman of a household, floats up through the different floors of an apartment block. Through this a panorama of different residents is sketched. With both lightness and philosophical depth, Suri paints a portrait of India’s complex society.

Manil Suri, born in Bombay in 1959, teaches Mathematics in the USA. His first novel was a bestseller. “The Death of Vishnu” merges reality with dream as well as everyday life and myth. It can be read as a metaphor for the states of being within Hinduism.
