In hardly any other percussion formation does the sonic diversity of percussive art become as clear-cut as in Melbourne-based Australian ensemble Speak Percussion. The ensemble’s activities span a wide variety of contexts and genres ranging from regular music festival concerts to experimental hybrid-arts events. By collaborating with installation artists, choreographers, instrument makers, visual artists, sound engineers and architects, the ensemble’s musicians are continuously discovering further percussive possibilities and entering new territories. In particular, Speak Percussion fosters close contact with a young generation of musicians and composers.
At MaerzMusik, Speak Percussion presents new works by four young Australian composers for two to three percussionists, audio tapes and electronics, among them two premieres. They take a highly unconventional compositional approach, incorporating lo-fi electronics and everyday objects and appealing to an aesthetic between avant-garde pop, progressive rock, noise and conceptual minimalism.
