K-18 ‘Some Kubricks of Blood’
KALLE KALIMA OMNIBUS
Past Dates
For four nights, the A-Trane will provide the ‘playground’ for Finnish guitarist and adopted Berliner Kalle Kalima. Kalima studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later at Hanns Eisler College in Berlin. He is currently involved with over half a dozen interesting bands and projects, performing on national and international stages.
At this year’s edition of JazzFest Berlin he is invited to introduce four projects of his choice.
K-18 (“18 certificate” in Finnish) is and has been inspired by his admiration for the late work of director Stanley Kubrick, with whom the guitarist shares a predilection for the bizarre. With trio Klima Kalima the industrious Finn declares his love to contemporary jazz, always, however, keeping his ironic distance. Kalle and his wife Essi write tunes and lyrics for Soi, a vocal band rooted in the tradition of Finnish folk. The project that recently has been attracting most attention, however, is the trio Johnny La Marama with its urban blues grotesques.
