Fat Kid Wednesdays
Minneapolis – Saint Paul is renowned as the cultural hub of the Mid West and the stronghold of the rock and pop and –since the success of The Bad Plus– also the popular jazz scene. The twin cities’ latest export hit is the young band Fat Kid Wednesdays. The trio’s approach to jazz legacies is as uninhibited as once Hüsker Dü’s approach to rock. With saxophone, bass and drums they translate the achievements of Dexter Gordon or Sonny Rollins into a contemporary context, but also count the likes of Björk and German electronics pioneer Oval among their role models.
Confusing and catching, Fat Kid Wednesdays are a living proof that the return of avant-garde to jazz does not have to take the detour of neo conservatism.
