Berliner Philharmoniker / Sir Simon Rattle

Past Dates

Bruckner dedicated his third symphony to his idol Richard Wagner; his eighth to the admired Emperor Joseph I. His ninth, however, he dedicated to »the good lord«. These are the greatest of his monumental orchestral works. All three will be performed at musikfest berlin 08. The ninth remained unfinished, yet concludes – both touchingly as well as convincingly – with a broad, slow movement. With transcendent beauty and cryptic boldness Bruckner anticipated something that became natural to Oliver Messiaen: that slow pieces are closer to the Divine secret than any triumphal finale.
