Boris Charmatz calls his installation ”héâtre-élévision“ a pseudoperformance. We are guided into a room as if into a private livingroom, we’re invited to lie down and are confronted with images on a television screen located over our heads. The test card is there, an exception among this rather intimizing arrangement of images. It’s a round dance of choreographies, where the performers observe us as we are observing; they look back at us, almost eerily. With this work from the year 2002, Boris Charmatz goes beyond the scope of classical choreography, only to confront us the more directly with its conditions. Because here it is the spectator who is choreographed, who lies down to surrender to a fictional intimacy – a situation not entirely unlike that of a peep-show.
