What is missing from protest movements in public squares all over the world is a contemporary soundtrack. In her third chorus production, the first to feature men and women on stage together, Polish director Marta Górnicka provides just that. The starting point for this “requiem machine“, constructed by Marta Górnicka out of language, music and choreography, were Polish poet Władysław Broniewski’s poems. Written almost a hundred years ago during the great economic depression, they appear surprisingly up to date. The rhythm of the recitation is contagious; the collective body of the chorus gives us courage. Górnicka achieves a paradoxical effect: The production deals with the redundancy of human beings in a world increasingly driven by machines, and yet it shows the liberated energy of outraged women and men, whose strength develops its own mechanics, opposing the ruling system.
