Julien Gosselin’s stage adaptation of Michel Houellebecq’s best-selling novel made him the shooting star of last year’s Avignon theatre festival. He was the first artist in his country to venture on this adaptation, which was not only a success with reviewers, but also made him a favourite with the audience. His production bridges the gap between pop and post-humanism and combines postmodern knowledge, post-dramatic theatre and the source novel’s material in a way that is both entertaining and disillusioning. Gosselin and his young company approach the material, which was published in 1998 and is little short of historical for their generation, from a contemporary perspective. Upheavals of twenty years ago, like the deciphering of the human genome and the possibility of cloning human DNA , are run-of-the-mill phenomena for those born after 1980. The conjunction of genetic engineering with what is still making the rounds as sexual liberation (under the heading of “1968”) proves to be another relevant subject of the novel: ten characters investigating what remains of Houellebecq’s vision for the next generation.
