Yael Ronen was born in Jerusalem in 1976. She has worked in Tel Aviv and now lives in Berlin, where she is resident director at Maxim Gorki Theater. She also regularly directs productions in Austria. Her work “Dritte Generation” (Third Generation, 2008), featuring Israeli, Palestine and German actors has been presented at several festivals. At Schauspielhaus Graz, she developed “Hakoah Wien”, a play about her own family history, which won the 2013 Nestroy Theatre Award. At Maxim Gorki Theater, she directed the world premiere of Olga Grjasnowa’s play “Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt” (All Russians Love Birch Trees). “Common Ground”, a piece featuring actors from ex-Yugoslavia, was invited to the 2015 Berlin Theatertreffen and won the Audience Award at Mülheimer Theatertage. Other works at Maxim Gorki Theater include “Erotic Crisis” and “Das Kohlhaas-Prinzip” (The Kohlhaas Principle). “The Situation”, developed together with six actors, was premiered on 4 September 2015 and is Yael Ronen’s second play to be invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen.
