Falk Richter was born in Hamburg in 1969. He studied Linguistics, Philosophy and Stage Directing at the University of Hamburg. While still at university, he started creating his own productions. Since 1994, he has directed productions at numerous renowned national and international theatres, including Schauspiel Frankfurt, Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Maxim Gorki Theater, Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Hamburgische Staatsoper as well as Nationaltheatret Oslo, Toneelgroep Amsterdam and Théâtre National Wallonie – Bruxelles. He has furthermore produced work for various festivals, including Ruhrtriennale, Salzburger Festspiele and Festival d’Avignon. As a playwright, Falk Richter wrote texts including “Gott ist ein DJ”, “Electronic City”, “Unter Eis” and “Trust”. His plays have been translated into numerous languages and produced across the world. In recent years, he has increasingly developed independent projects based on his own texts, together with an ensemble of actors, musicians and dancers. With choreographer Anouk van Dijk, he created a number of dance theatre projects with a particular combination of text, dance and music, establishing a new aesthetic form. Their joint productions are touring internationally with great success. In 2013, he won the Friedrich-Luft-Award for his music, dance and theatre production “For the Disconnected Child”, which premiered at Berlin’s Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in cooperation with Staatsoper im Schillertheater. For his research project “Small Town Boy”, which had its world premiere at Maxim Gorki Theater in 2014, he received the 2016 Soul of Stonewall Award in the category “Culture”. “NEVER FOREVER” at Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, which was presented at the Venice Biennial in 2015, was his first collaboration with choreographer Nir de Volff and the dance company TOTAL BRUTAL. Falk Richter is a guest lecturer for the degree course “Stage Directing” at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch”. The 2017/18 season sees Falk Richter’s first return to Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg since 1999. He directed the world premiere production of Elfriede Jelinek’s “Am Königsweg (On the Royal Road)”, which opened on 28 October 2017.
