Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper is an art historian, worked as preservationist in Berlin from 1988 to 2002, and has been Professor for Historic Preservation and Urban Cultural Heritage at the TU Berlin since 2002. She was an active participant in numerous controversial civic debates about monuments and testimonies of the GDR history an about buildings of post-war modernism in the East and the West: political monuments of the GDR era, the Wall, the Palast der Republik, the Kulturforum, and large suburban settlements. Since 2016, she has been speaker of the DFG Research Training Group “Identity and Heritage”. Her main areas of interest are: theory of monument value and cultural heritage, topographies of events and memories, politics of memory, architecture and urban development of post-war modernism. She is the author and editor of numerous publications on these topics.
