Jen Carss

Children’s theatre maker, queer artist – Leeds, England
Participant International Forum 2020

Jen Carss is a Queer artist born in Northumberland, England. After graduating from drama school in Manchester, her passion for storytelling accidentally steered her toward children’s theatre; co-collaborating from 2016–2019 with various actor-musicians to establish Leeds based company Curly Tales. The collective subverted traditional tales into feministic and playful narratives with live original music, puppetry and song for 3–8 year olds.

Jen Carss’ exploration of her own Queer identity is of profound importance in her artistic practice. She developed adult Drag King character ‘Mo Terboat’ whose misogyny and privilege comically reflect the embedded white patriarchal structures present in England. In 2019, she collaborated with Curious Arts to develop Spectacular Drag Story Time for 2–7 year olds. Jen Carss also hosts Queerious Podcast to open up conversations with other artists from the breadth of the LGBTQ+ community.
