Hend Elbalouty is an Egyptian production designer, choreographer, performer and writer. She works across mediums combining and mixing them in accordance to the project at hand. Her primary interests are the body, biology, Egyptian popular culture and the taboo. Her most recent work began in 2019 as part of a research residency with the Embassy of Foreign Artists in Geneva, Switzerland. During her residency Hend Elbalouty wrote her first book “hell vol.1”, a collection of fictional nightmares. The book stands alone, but also partakes in performative installations and readings, reflecting on taboos surrounding the female body, race and forgery of history. The production of the book was the first step to start her collective Gaaz together with Sara Fakhry Ismail who designed the cover and artwork for the book. Hend Elbalouty holds a Bachelor’s degree in production design from The Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo and a 3-year degree in Dance from the Cairo Contemporary Dance Centre. Hend Elbalouty is currently an MA student at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne where she is researching the relation between art and social class, creating a performance based on local Egyptian dance and music (Mahraganat).
