Deniza Popova was born in Bulgaria and grew up in the north of Germany. She trained as a singer at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and then studied Musicology, Music Ethnology and Bulgarian Studies at the Humboldt-Universität and Freie Universität Berlin, writing her post-graduate thesis on the authenticity, mediality and identity of “authentic Bulgarian music”. She has collaborated with the Russian-Ukrainian Ensemble Polýnushka for 15 years. Within the Bulgarian church, she practices traditional ancient Byzantine church music, and she is an active proponent of communicative musical events and innovative methods. She conducts both academic and artistic teaching at universities and colleges and has an extensive music pedagogy practice in Germany and Bulgaria.
