Dara Birnbaum

Dara Birnbaum lives and works in New York. Trained as an architect and urban planner, Birnbaum began experimenting with the medium of video while teaching at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where she met, among others, Dan Graham. For over four decades now the native New Yorker has been examining ideologies and the aesthetic character of mass media images with her subversive videos and installations. Birnbaum has exhibited at institutions including the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2021), MoMA PS1, New York (2019–2020), the National Portrait Gallery, London (2018), the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio (2018), the South London Gallery (2011), and has had major retrospectives at the Serralves Foundation, Porto (2010), the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent (2009), the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008), the Kunsthalle in Vienna (2006), and the Jewish Museum, New York (2003) as well as being shown at documenta 7, 8, and 9.
