Cao Fei

With her multifaceted work, Cao Fei illuminates extensive social changes in the era of globalisation, urbanisation, and digitisation. The Guangzhou-born artist places a special focus on the radical social and cultural changes in her homeland China. In multimedia installations, videos, and photographs, she investigates the fears, dreams, and strategies, of a new generation of Chinese youth who temporarily escape their constantly changing living environment by immersing themselves in virtual worlds. Selected solo exhibitions include the Serpentine Galleries, London (2020), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019), the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative at the Guggenheim Museum New York, Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hongkong and K21 Ständehaus, Düsseldorf (all 2018), MoMA PS1 (2016), Secession, Vienna and the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (both 2015) as well as Tate Modern, London (2013).
