Marino Formenti

Marino Formenti’s unusual combination of emotion and intelligence characterizes him as one of the most interesting musicians of our time. Praised by the Los Angeles Times as “Glenn Gould of the 21st Century” his fondness for experimenting with new and unexpected combinations led to the development of unique projects and alternative concert formats.

In his recital programs “Kurtag’s Ghosts” and “Liszt Inspections” Marino Formenti strives for a continuous flow of dialogue between the compositions through which he shatters the dimensions of traditional piano recitals. In “Nowhere” Marino Formenti plays, sleeps and eats for several weeks continuously in the same room which is open to the public, desiring to “disappear more and more into the music”. “One to One” is a project that has been originally produced for Art Basel, offering a unique 2-hour musical encounter with Marino Formenti to only a single listener. In one of his latests projects, the film “Schubert und Ich”, Marino Formenti rehearses and accompanies songs by Franz Schubert with non-musicians as well as guides and inspires them through their own interpretations.

Marino Formenti has appeared at the international festivals of Salzburg, Lucerne, Edinburgh, Schleswig-Holstein, Ravinia and Aspen, as well as the great concert halls of Berlin, Vienna, Paris, London, Zurich, Moscow, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Marino Formenti’s orchestra engagements have included performances with the New York and Munich Philharmonic, Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of such Maestri as Franz Welser-Möst, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel.

Marino Formenti has led performances as a conductor at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Konzerthaus Berlin, Salle Pleyel in Paris as well as in Rome, Milan, Los Angeles, Johannesburg or Tokyo. He conducted the Austrian premiere of Kurt Weill’s opera “Der Protagonist” and in 2010 led the chamber version of Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel,” which was unanimously hailed by the European press.
