Beirut-born guitarist Sharif Sehnaoui specialises in free improvisation. He plays both the electric and acoustic guitars. By preparing his instruments using specific techniques he expands their sound spectrum in individual ways. Sehnaoui started his career in 1998 in Paris, where he played in various formations. He soon began performing at festivals in the USA and Europe. Together with Mazen Kerbaj, Sehnaoui co-founded Irijal, an experimental music festival that has taken place annually since 2001 in Beirut – the only one of its kind in the Arab world. In addition, he has initiated several experimental music CD labels under the umbrella of Al Maslakh records. At home he plays in the A Trio and BAO groups, among others, and also experiments with the percussive qualities of the guitar.
